Four sheets of archival Hahnemühle photographic paper were hung above the bed in a rented room. The enclosed space, the paper and the artist’s daily life together became a kind of biological printer.

Repeated smoking acted as ink: accumulating smoke gradually altered the surface of paper intended to preserve images for a century. Rather than a conventional photograph, the work makes visible the traces of breathing, time and the quiet consumption of life within an urban living space.

Hahnemühle photographic paper, low-cost picture frames. 50 × 50 cm. Exhibition documentation: Sit Beside You Watch the Clouds, Chengdu, 2022.
